The Auditorium
Welcome to the Broadway's Auditorium. The stalls and balcony could originally host an audience of 1,060 people. Today this would make it the largest single cinema auditorium in Scotland, but it was relatively small by 1930s standards! The Greens Playhouse in Glasgow had 4,368 seats. In New York, the Roxy cinema had 5,920 seats.
When squash courts were installed in 1981, a false ceiling was erected, hiding the auditorium's shell for decades. Framing the screen opening are two deep proscenium arches, rectangular and lined in gold. Look up and see the repeating curve pattern on the ceiling, and our six signature camels!
We've painted over everything that remains from the Leisure Centre era in black. Everything else you can see is the original 1935 design. The exception to this rule is the colour scheme, which was originally described as 'stone and flame'. We believe the auditorium has only been painted once - during the bingo era (1960s) - creating the blue and purple design we see today.
