The Broadway Cinema

Years of Operation: 1935-1976
Original Seating: 1,060
Architect: Alister Gladstone MacDonald
During the Golden Age of Cinema (late 1920s to late 1950s) cinema was the principal form of popular entertainment in towns and cities across Scotland. South Ayrshire had 16 cinemas in total!
In 1935, Prestwick welcomed its grand new Super Cinema. Architect Alister Gladstone MacDonald drew from many influences in his design, including the latest, modern design concepts.
Almost a century later, the steel-framed building stands strong. The Broadway’s story also survives, in a large collection of rescued documents and artefacts, and the memories of the community.
