Prestwick's Cinema
Cinema has always been a 'people business' and the Broadway was at the heart of Prestwick's community.
It was the venue for the annual prize-givings of Prestwick High School. It held charitable fundraisers for a remarkable range of causes including local hospitals, wartime evacuees, and national memorials. During the Second World War, as well as providing much-needed entertainment, the Broadway acted as the voice of the nation by providing updates from the front via newsreels.
For local children, cinema was the highlight of the week, especially during Children's Week in summer. This included free entry to a film at the Broadway! The rest of the year, Saturday mornings generated the most
excitement. The Broadway's original Saturday morning club was founded as the Mickey Mouse Club in 1936.
