The Broadway Hosts Packed August Events Programme

The Broadway Cinema Experience has held its busiest, most packed programme yet!

On Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th August, the Broadway played host to a spectacular weekend schedule, with over 100 tickets sold for the Broadway Pop-Up Museum and a variety of member-exclusive events.

Saturday opened with 35mm demonstrations at the Pop-Up Museum before a very special history presentation by Gordon Barr and Gary Painter, Scotland's leading cinema historians and founders of the excellent Scottish Cinemas database and website. Camels, Elephants, Monkeys, and Prancing Deer took visitors on a tour through Scotland's exotic cinema building history, with Gordon and Gary hosting a presentation within a surviving 1930s auditorium for the very first time. Hard hats were also a first whilst presenting!

The day then continued with the first of two 75th anniversary film screenings across the weekend, the classic sci-fi thriller, The Day the Earth Stood Still! Physical models of Klaatu's flying saucer and Gort the robot were created for the foyer, and the sci-fi celebrations continued after the film with Space Scores II, the return of the Broadway's inaugural hi-fi listening session!

On Sunday, the Pop-Up Museum mornings returned, this time with live Compton organ performances by world-renowned cinema and theatre organist, Aaron Hawthorne! The musical theme to the day then continued a live music and poetry performance by Carolyn and Ken O' Hara, titled Songs from the Movies... Words from the Heart. Carolyn and Ken were then followed by the second film to round off the weekend, the golden age musical classic, An American in Paris!

Gene Kelly's masterpiece featured equal showmanship effort as The Day the Earth Stood Still, with, for the Paris setting, a 1954 Citroen 2CV parked out front courtesy of Arjan from Ayrshire Classics Car Club. The theme continued in the foyer, with American and French flags, a selection of musical instruments, and other golden age musical memorabilia on display throughout.

We are still on a high from a truly brilliant weekend, and we would like to thank all who attended to make each event extra special. The Broadway Cinema Experience is now helping cement our beloved cinema's place as the cultural heart of our community, as we look to continue to grow and evolve our visitor experience into 2027 and beyond.
